The Dragon of Shandon Parade

Blog

Cork Community Art Link proudly celebrated the return of the Dragon of Shandon Parade on the night of October 31. The event marked both the ancient tradition of Samhain and the organization’s 30-year commitment to bringing art into Cork’s public spaces.

The event featured a spectacular 36-foot Dragon crafted entirely from tape, accompanied by a legion of ghouls, beasts, misfits, and demons, thrilling thousands of spectators in Cork City.

This captivating spectacle was made possible by hundreds of participants, including volunteers and community groups, who collaborated with artists to create floats, costumes, and performances. International contributors from France and Australia added to the magic.

The night included performances from various groups, emphasizing the event’s inclusive nature. The Dragon of Shandon Parade began as a grassroots initiative, driven by the desires of the Cork community, and has since grown into an urban legend that belongs to the people of Cork, embodying the value of inclusiveness.

The event continued the tradition of offering free workshops, making art accessible to all. On Halloween night, the parade started on Church Street, winding its way through various city streets, concluding with a series of performances on the Coal Quay.

The Dragon of Shandon Parade is a testament to the power of community and art, celebrating both Cork’s history and its vibrant creative spirit. Join our wonderful family in Cork. In Ireland Experience we offer our students a total immersion in the culture, history and customs of Ireland.
