Host families working hand in hand with Ireland Experience in Cork are one of our greatest assets. Hosting an international student who is learning English can be an enriching experience. Host families have the opportunity to help students improve their language skills and gain a deeper understanding of Irish culture. However, it can be challenging to know how best to support the student’s learning.
They create a supportive environment. Learning a new language can be intimidating, so it’s important to create a supportive environment for your student. Families encourage them to speak English as much as possible and praise their efforts.
Families provide opportunities for language practice. One of the best ways to improve language skills is through practice. Host families encourage our students to practice their English outside of the classroom by providing opportunities for language practice such as meeting other English speakers.
They also suggest students reading and writing in English: these are important skills that can greatly improve language proficiency. They know how important it is for the kids to read books, articles, and news stories in English.
Technology can be a powerful tool for language learning. Students are encouraged to use language learning apps, watch English language TV shows and movies, and listen to English language podcasts.
Understanding Irish culture, sharing information about local customs, traditions, and history or taking students to local cultural events, such as festivals or concerts is an important part of learning English.
