On October 31st, Cork came alive with the much-anticipated Shandon Dragon Parade, an annual event that honours the ancient Samhain festival with a modern twist. The parade highlighted its commitment to community art, transforming the streets of Cork into a unique stage where creativity and tradition blend seamlessly.
The star of the parade was the dragon, accompanied by a fantasy of mythical creatures: goblins, beasts, and demons who paraded under Cork’s skies. Hundreds gathered to witness this visual spectacle, including many of our students, who had the chance to enjoy an authentic Irish Halloween night.
This artistic display was made possible through the collaboration of numerous volunteers, community groups, and artists, along with international guests from countries like France and Australia, adding a special touch to the event. Floats, costumes, and performances filled the streets with an enchanting atmosphere that makes the Shandon Dragon Parade a celebration like no other.
Free workshops were also part of the experience, giving attendees the chance to get involved in the artistic creation, a true effort to keep art accessible to everyone. Starting from Church Street, the parade wound through Cork’s city centre, culminating in performances at Coal Quay, closing a magical Halloween night with style.
The Shandon Dragon Parade is more than just a spectacle; it is a celebration of community spirit, cultural richness, and Cork’s welcoming character. Join us next year to experience this wonderful event with us!
